Focus on competency 4 of the ICF framework:
demonstrating ethical practice
In a world where the diffusion of professional coaching continues to grow, the International Coaching Federation (ICF) has been defining the core competencies used by professional coaches for more than 25 years. Those core skills include 8 distinct competencies, the fourth of which consists of "Cultivating Trust and Safety", i.e., the coach partners with the client to create a safe, supportive environment that allows the client to share freely, while maintaining a relationship of mutual respect and trust.
In practical terms, this means that the coach :
recognizes and respects the uniqueness of the client's talents, ideas and work in the coaching process.
demonstrates support, empathy or concern for the client.
acknowledges and supports the client's expression of feelings, perceptions, concerns, beliefs or suggestions.
partners with the client by inviting any response to the coaching interventions and welcoming the client's response.
In our coaching practice, we deploy this skill :
by creating a supportive environment for our clients: openness, transparency, special attention, empathy, support
by understanding and respecting our clients in what they are, in what they express,
by listening, acknowledging, encouraging, respecting, welcoming, responding to our clients' reactions
