Understanding Cultural Intelligence
Cultural intelligence refers to an individual's capability to function effectively in culturally diverse settings. It encompasses cognitive, behavioral, motivational, and metacognitive aspects, enabling individuals to discern and adapt to various cultural contexts.
Assessing Cross-Cultural Competence
Evaluating cultural competence involves more than just recognizing cultural differences; it requires a deep understanding and adaptability. Key components include:
✅ Cultural Awareness: Recognizing one's own cultural biases and understanding how they influence interactions.
✅ Cultural Knowledge: Gaining information about different cultural practices, values and worldviews.
✅ Cultural Skills: Developing the ability to communicate and behave appropriately in diverse cultural settings.
✅ Cultural Leverage: Developing the ability to use cultural differences to co-construct new possibilities that are more effective, fruitful and agile.
Tools like the Bennett Scale, also known as the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, can aid in assessing an individual's progression from ethnocentrism to ethnorelativism. The Culture Map Tool by Erin Meyer is a good starting point to explore 16 cultural dimensions and how you can gain flexibility along those dimensions.
