How to Address Mental Health Issues at Work and Do What Matters in Times of Stress ?

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Many workers are experiencing work distress, both physically and psychologically. More than half of European employees say that they regularly, or even very often, experience stress directly related to their work. And an estimated 15% of working-age adults have a mental disorder at any point in time. Depression and anxiety are estimated to cost the global economy US $1 trillion each year driven predominantly by lost productivity (Cf. WHO).

"Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, to realize their abilities, to learn well and work well, and to contribute to their communities. Poor mental health has a negative effect on a person’s cognitive, behavioural, emotional, social and relational well-being and functioning, their physical health, and their personal identity and well-being as related to work" (World Health Organization)

Risks of negative mental health seem even higher for remote workers. While work from home presents some opportunities for a better work-life balance, many workers found themselves working longer hours, not being able to draw the line between work and life anymore.

The following 2 resources published by the World Health Organization highlight and provide recommendations to deal with mental health issues and stress :

  • The guidelines on mental health at work providing evidence-based global public health guidance on organizational interventions, manager and worker training for the promotion of positive mental health and prevention of mental health conditions
